Product Review: Healing Hippy
By Tracey Ristow
I make an effort in my every-day life to use natural personal care products. Although I am a scientist, when the names of the ingredients in my products are more the 3 syllables long I know there are too many chemicals for me to feel comfortable using on an everyday basis. I have tried lots of “natural” products, most of which don’t work. I even went as far as making my own products a few years back, but I could never quite perfect the recipe and found the cost of buying so many ingredients just for my own individual use not to be cost-effective.
A friend introduced me to Healing Hippy products a few months ago. Healing Hippy is a small, California based company which manufactures natural products from ingredients I was familiar with and could actually pronounce. I ordered the deodorant, healing salve and lip balm directly through their website and a few days later a box with my products and a little note from Kassy, The Chief Hippy arrived.
Verdict: Overall, I am impressed with The Healing Hippy products and I will be re-purchasing soon.
OK, I will admit this to the world and it won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has exercised with me, but I stink when I sweat and I sweat a lot. The combined problem of being a stinky sweater and wanting a natural deodorant has left me feeling “unfresh” many times. What is a girl to do?
I recently tried The Healing Hippy Deodorant while in Maui when the temperature and humidity were high and I knew I (and others around me) would need some serious armpit deodorization. The Healing Hippy Deodorant is made up of all natural ingredients including coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, arrowroot powder, baking soda and tea tree essential oil. It has a nice light and pleasant smell. It is a solid deodorant but at higher temps can become a bit soft so I just “dab” it on my underarms once a day. The overall verdict from myself and family was that it was a winner in controlling my stink, even in the jungle-like conditions of Maui.
Healing Salve ($20)
The Healing Salve comes in a tiny blue jar and I bought it without any specific purpose in mind. What I learned was that it is a tiny blue jar of awesomeness! It is made up of coconut oil, beeswax, witch hazel and the essential oils of helichrysum italicum and melaleuca. I know helichrysum italicum goes against my rules for ingredients being 3 syllables or less, but I am familiar with helichrysum italicum and actually own this anti-inflammatory essential oil, so it gets a pass. The Healing Salve is quite solid in the jar but the warmth of my fingers was enough to soften it for use. Do you remember the Dad on “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” who sprayed Windex as a cure-all for a myriad of ailments? Well, that’s how I now think of Healing Salve. I have used it successfully on sunburn, pimples, cracked heels, itchy bug bites and minor scrapes. It is my new go-to ointment and at only 2 ounces it will come with me when I travel, too.
Organic Lip Balm ($3.50)
I don’t have much to say about the Lip Balm other than I liked it the one time I used it. My husband stole it out of my makeup bag after my first use and he has failed to return it to me even after multiple requests as he likes using it before his daily road biking trips to protect his lips from the wind. The Lip Balm is made from organic sunflower oil, organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, organic peppermint essential oil, vitamin E, rosemary extract, organic calendula. No silicones, no petrolatum. The 3 pack will be on my next re-order list so I can have one of my own.
Disclaimer: I purchased all of the above products from the Healing Hippy at full-price and received no compensation for this product review.
